D.C. Metro vs. New York Subway: a battle of the trains
Having now interned in both New York City and Washington, D.C. during the summer, the first question people seem to always ask me is: "How is the subway?!" (and yes, this refers to both the metro and the subway for non-natives to either of these cities.
Winner: NYC (sorry, D.C., maybe when that Silver line opens up..)
D.C. Much to my displeasure my first drunken night out on the town, D.C. metros actually STOP RUNNING. At night, that is. Apparently people in this town actually have to work, so makes sense I suppose. And it definitely makes me go home a little earlier and skip that last tequila shot...
NYC: Let's be real, the city that never sleeps isn't going to have a subway that does. But real talk, who actually feels safe riding the subway at 4 a.m.?! Oh, you do? That's awkward... but really, as much as it is a convenience, it is unsafe at a certain point, so I'm not sure it's worth it.
Winner: NYC ( at least we have the OPTION to bond with the mole people at 4 am, gosh)
This is also their response to my answer to their follow-up question:
"YOU RIDE THE SUBWAY BY YOURSELF?!"
"YOU RIDE THE SUBWAY BY YOURSELF?!"
guys, if I can survive a frat party, I think I can handle public transportation...
But let's cut to the chase- the Metro and the Subway are VASTLY different. Let me describe:
The Look Reflects the People
D.C. subways clearly reflect the people *ahem politicians* that ride them everyday. Everyone, even the maintenance men of D.C., act like politicians. They pretend to be nice to everyone, dress nice, mean well- i.e. the metro is clean, its illegal to eat or drink, and it's pricier than NY- but at the end of the day...
alot of it is just an act. You're still on a shitty transportation subway.
Me when I realized on the D.C. metro there were no crazy apocalypse people or
rats at my feet
NYC subways are like the people of New York- what you see is what you get. Sure, it could be a little cleaner and a little flashier like D.C.- but who cares?! It's still a subway.
Winner: Subway (come on, we don't need even more lies!)
The Facilities
Only in D.C. could they pass a law making it ILLEGAL to eat or drink on the metro. I mean, it's a metro.... don't you expect that? I loved it until I realized that included the 5 gallon-coffee that makes me look a little less zombie each day I consume in the mornings. But I quickly got over it when I remembered that one time a homeless man spilled his entire can of TAB down my leg on the way to Times Square in the subway....
NYC would look the other way, D.C. will arrest ya
Winner: D.C
The Usability
Just by looking at D.C.'s map versus NYC's, you can easily tell which one is more applicable. Having lived in the Upper West (i.e. the fancy phrase for Harlem) and Alexandria, VA, I can safely say I haven't lived in exactly the hotspots of both these towns, and a means of transportation is necessary. D.C., although great, leaves out a lot of great areas and their metro stops are a little harder to get to. They do hit main stops and are bigger, however, and a little walking never hurt (probably actually helps...). NYC, you can basically find a stop every 2 to 3 blocks if your heart desired. So, yeah, the winner is...Winner: NYC (sorry, D.C., maybe when that Silver line opens up..)
An unrelated rant gif on how the Silver line
better be worth these pushbacks...

All the D.C. people trying to woo a taxi driver when the metro closes
Ultimate Winner: NYC
Let's be real, there's a reason everyone in the US calls any form of a train system a "subway"- and there's a delicious sandwich shop named after it! Although who knows, maybe I'm just ending this post early b/c I need to catch the metro before it closes....
